Shawn Lynch was born in Boston and moved outside of the city after the age of six. As a child, Shawn loved going back and visiting the city, making trips to the museums, baseball games, aquarium, waterfront and more. His fascination with the city prompted Shawn to go back and graduate from Boston University in 2004 with a degree in photojournalism. Shawn loves the life and energy of city, not just the people, but also the places.
While attending Boston University, Shawn landed his first photography job with a local wedding photographer. After graduating, Shawn started freelancing for different companies until his role with one chain of newspapers turned into a first a part time and then a full time staff position at Community Newspaper Company (GateHouse Media Inc.). Shawn was with them until February of 2008 when he moved to New York to kick-start a career as a freelance photographer. Since then he has been traveling in and around New York for assignments as well as to New Jersey. He also travels back home often to photograph weddings and visit family and friends.
Shawn loves the fact that his job affords him many opportunities to challenge himself on a daily basis, noting "You never know what to expect heading into any assignment, which keeps you on your toes and demands that you be able to adapt to any and every situation that may arise."
Shawn understands that the camera is just a tool for capturing images, but to make a real impact with a photo you need something more - vision, creativity, talent, and skill. These are some of Shawn's most valuable tools when it comes to crafting a great image. Another important factor is making my subjects at ease with having their picture taken. Shawn says, "I come into every situation with understanding and passion. I am extremely respectful of the subject's needs. I listen to what the subject is saying to try to get a better understanding of what they are all about so that I can use that information to help me create a more powerful and storytelling image."
"I love my job," says Shawn, "I don't think I would want to be anything else, except maybe a rock star, but I can't sing for the life of me. I use my camera to help me gain a better understanding of the world around me and I'm always excited to see where my camera will take me next, whether it be to a place in my own back yard, some underground volcanic tunnels in Iceland, on a tour bus with a couple of English and Irish bands through the English countryside, or to an orphanage in Ecuador."
